Riding Tri-Rail will cost more beginning Monday.

That's when the 25 percent rate hikes take effect. Tri-Rail has seen record ridership, but recently the tri-county commuter rail line has struggled financially with operation costs rising and cuts from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Despite the hikes, Tri-Rail is reportedly among the lowest rail system in the nation.

Traveling the full 70-mile stretch from Miami International Airport to the last stop in Mangonia Park near Palm Beach Gardens will now cost $6.90 from $5.50, while a monthly adult pass will go from $80 to $100.

Members of the Employer Discount Program will pay $75 for an EDP Monthly Ticket, up from the current fare of $60. The price of a full-fare, roundtrip ticket to ride the entire length of the system will be $11.55, up from the current fare of $9.25. Weekend fares, which entitle passengers to ride all day for one flat fee, will be $5, up from the current fare of $4, with the discounted weekend fare being $2.50, up from the current fare of $2.

Monthly tickets purchased in May for travel in June will be sold at the increased prices and in accordance with the new fare structure. Half-price discounts are still in effect for students, senior citizens 65 and older, persons with disabilities and Medicare card holders.

Tri-Rail currently recovers approximately 18 percent of the operations budget through fares.

Tri-Rail is a regional rail line linking Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The 70.8 mile system has 18 stations along the South Florida coast.
