FBI Reports Deliberate Vadalism At Turkey Point
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
A hole drilled into a pipe that is part of a nuclear reactor's cooling system at Turkey Point power plant has been ruled as dileberate according to FBI investigators.
The defect was discovered in March 2006 during a routine inspection. Officials say they don't plan to file charges because there's not enough evidence to prove criminal intent.
FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela says an out-of-state contractor hired to do routine maintenance is suspected of drilling the hole. She describes it as an act of vandalism. More than 700 utility
workers have been interviewed for the investigation.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the public's health and safety were not at risk. So the act was not deemed to be sabotage.
A Florida Power & Light spokeswoman won't comment on the investigation.
