Almost a week has passed since University of Connecticut, and former Miami Edison High, cornerback Jasper Howard was stabbed to death during a campus party. However, University of Connecticut police say they are no closer to an arrest and now face a new hurdle.
According to UConn's student newspaper, The Daily Campus, UConn police say threats of violence are being made in Internet postings against any witnesses who may have seen the stabbing. Authorities say they are looking into the threats and are still hopeful witnesses will submit videos, photos, or other information about the killing.
So far, only one man, 21-year-old Johnny Hood of Hartford has been arrested in connection with the fight that ended up with Howard's stabbing. Hood is not charged with stabbing Howard.
Howard's girlfriend Daneisha Freeman is an expectant mother and said Howard was "really excited, very excited that he was going to have a child." Freeman bears no ill will toward the culprit, but does want justice. "Just justice, I don't feel anger toward anyone or anything, I just hope that they catch the person that did it," she said.
UConn plays West Virginia on Saturday. Before the game begins, there will be a moment of silence in honor of Jasper Howard, known as "Jazz." UConn players will wear a sticker with Howard's initials on their helmets for the rest of the season. In addition, UConn will carry his helmet or jersey to away games.
West Virginia players also will be wearing helmet stickers with Howard's number, 6, when they play the Huskies on Saturday. And when Clemson plays the University of Miami on Saturday, Clemson cornerback Chris Chancellor, also from Miami, will wear Howard's number 6 jersey in his honor.
There is a viewing of Jasper Howard on Sunday from 1:00 9:00 p.m. at Richardson Mortuary, located at 4500 NW 17th Avenue.
The funeral for 20-year-old Jasper Howard will be at 11 a.m. Monday at New Birth Baptist Church, located at NW 135th St. and 23rd Avenue in Miami. The entire University of Connecticut football team is expected to attend the funeral.
The burial will follow at Dade Memorial Park, located at NW 135th Street and 16th Avenue.
