UTD Declares An Impasse With Miami-Dade Schools
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Friction between the United Teachers of Dade and the Miami-Dade School Board has escalated, with an announcement by the union on Monday that they have reached an impasse.
UTD spent the better part of last month negotiating a salary raise for teachers and reached a contractual agreement on it, but when faced with massive budget cuts from the state the school board later announced it had to cut $72 million in pay raises. It used a loophole in its contract with teachers.
So far, the board has found about $200-million in savings. Withholding the raises and cost-of-living increases promised to teachers and other employees could save the additional $72 million.
This weekend heated talks between UTD and the school board did not result in an agreement, so UTD made the announcement Monday that they will take negotiations to another level. They will now rely on a magistrate to hear both sides and make a recommendation.
However, the ultimate decision lies in the hands of the school board.
