Overloaded Raft Led To Water Park Accident

WEST PALM BEACH (CBS4) ―

An overloaded raft may be to blame for an accident that injured four people at the popular Rapids Water Park in West Palm Beach.

According to the posted weight limit on the Black Thunder water ride, each raft tube has a maximum weight limit of 700 lbs. State investigators found during Wednesday's accident the raft was over loaded; at the time of the incident four riders were onboard with a combined weight of 850 to 900 lbs which caused the raft to capsize.

All four of the injured family members were taken to area hospitals.

Two children were sent to St. Mary's Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries. An older man was held for observation at Columbia Hospital where the fourth person, a teen, was treated and released.

The ride remained closed after the accident. It reopened on Thursday after investigators determined that the ride was structurally sound.
