A Margate woman who was pinned under a car in front of her condo after her husband accidentally backed over her continues to recover at a north Broward Hospital. Had Margate Fire Rescue not had a new device, they may not have gotten the woman out as easily.
Wednesday morning Roselyn Roose, 89, was listed in fair condition at North Broward Medical Center.
Roose and her husband, who live in Applewood Village located at 2659 Carambola Circle North, were planning on heading out when the husband decided to back the car up to their condo so his wife wouldn't have to walk in the rain. Police say as he did that, he struck the woman but apparently didn't notice. He then left her pinned underneath the car as he inside their home to look for her.
Eventually neighbors alerted them to what happened. Margate Fire Rescue personnel used a special type of airbags to lift the car off Roose.
Margate Firefighter Lt. Robert Ramirez told
CBS4 Reporter Joan Murray, "When the police dispatched they said we were gonna need a tow truck, so I knew it was pretty bad."
But instead of a tow truck, firefighters used a device known as a lift bag. The steel re-enforced lift bag inflates with an air hose and placed under a vehicle is able to lift it several inches. Using the Lift bag, firefighters were able to lift the car off Roslyn Roose. She was conscious through the whole operation.
Margate Fire Rescue Lt. Matthew Whiteshield said, "The whole rescue from the time they arrived took 12 minutes."
Firefighter Vito Labriola added, "This is necessary and should be mandated at every fire station. Not only can use it for vehicles but it can be used for collapsed structures."
Lt. Ramirez explained, "it went like clockwork. The lady benefited from our training."
