A public works employee in North Miami was pulled out of a sewer after he fell several feet and then got stuck Thursday afternoon.
Chopper 4 was over the scene of the sewage vault at 1850 NE 150 Street, where the man got stuck. Public workers and several fire rescue crews were seen hovering over him as they tried to safely get him out.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Arnold Piedrahita, "The man was walking over some aging plywood that covered the opening to the sewage vault when it gave way. He fell and was trapped about 15 feet down."
At one point crews were seen dropping an oxygen line to help the 39-year-old victim.
Lt. Piedrahita says a total 30 firefighters were used to extricate the trapped man. Some had to be lowered into the tank with oxygen masks to safely dislodge him. A crane was used to lift him up. The complexity of the rescue required the Technical Rescue Team to be called out, because of their expertise in working within confined spaces.
Fire rescue loaded him on a stretcher and took him to an air rescue helicopter. They took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital for the treatment of his injuries.
