2 Arrested After Elderly Man Attacked With Hammer

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― An 84-year-old Fort Lauderdale man is recovering at home after being beaten severely with a claw hammer during a home invasion robbery, and police have made two arrests.

Police say William Tubby was robbed of his cell phone, checkbook, car keys and watch during the attack on Wednesday. Police identified the attackers as 67-year-old Dorothy Robinson and 34-year-old Zarek Durinski.

CBS4 News spoke to Tubby about the attack.

He says Robinson came to his home to retrieve a massage table he had been holding for her. Durinski was with her. "I told them where to find it in the closet and the next thing I knew I was knocked in the head, I was stunned," a bruised Tubby says.

He had lent money to Robinson in the past and he believes that's what she was after. Police say Durinski held the victim's feet while Robinson hit him in the head with the hammer more than 8 times.

"She got the nail clippers and stabbed me. There was blood all over. I'm not a strong person but somehow I found the strength to get through."

Tubby attributes his grit to his training in the Navy more than 60 years ago.

Police say Robinson and Durinski weren't able to cash the man's checks, but they did manage to use his check to buy themselves a steak and lobster lunch.
Detectives say they found out Thursday that Robinson called the man's nurse and threatened the victim's life. The suspects were found at the Lauderhill Family Center, where police say they also recovered the hammer.

The victim's property also has been recovered "Both spoke to detectives and implicated themselves in the crime," police spokesman Sgt. Frank Sousa said.
