The Ferguson family is unable to pay for the only medical option that will save their three-year-old son's life, a liver transplant. They are reaching out to the community in order to help raise the money they need.
A few months ago, doctors diagnosed Omar Ferguson with Bilary Atresia. It's a disease which does not allow the body to remove bile, a substance that acts like poison if not released by the body. Omar's stomach is swollen and his body is quickly shutting down. There was no doctor available in the Bahamas--where he was born--to treat his condition. So the boy's family is in Miami get the world-class treatment offered at Jackson Hospital.
Doctors have said that his condition will continue to worsen and he will eventually die if he does not receive a liver transplant within the next month.
Alonzo Mourning, NBA All-Star and Founder of Zo's Fund for Life , headed a fundraiser for Omar, which he announced on Wednesday at the Alamo at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Campus.
The boy's mother is ecstatic.
"It's like an angel," said Darie Ferguson. "This is a visible angel."
With Omar's mother listening on, Mourning said the "Give Omar Life" campaign will raise $300,000 for the transplant. Zo's own fund will donate $50,000 towards his transplant.
