AA Continues Flt. Cancelations At Fort Lauderdale

Over 2,000 flights have been canceled nationwide.

CBS News Interactive: Eye On Air Safety

The cancellations keep coming from American Airlines. Thursday, the troubled carrier canceled an additional 900 flights nationwide to continue inspecting the wiring on MD-80 planes. That makes the total number of flights canceled in the U.S. around 2,400, and more could come on Friday.

On Thursday, a total of 12 flights were canceled at Fort Lauderdale International Airport. There have been 20 flights canceled in just two days at Fort Lauderdale International. No flights have been canceled out of Miami International because MD-80's are not flown in and out of the airport. Miami International is one of American's hubs in the United States.

American made the extraordinary move to cancel so many flights after Federal inspectors found problems with wiring work done on the MD-80 planes. The company maintains no passengers were ever in jeopardy due to the wiring problems.

Barbara Good told CBS4's Carey Codd that she had to fly to New Mexico on Continental Airlines, instead of American. The problem to her seems to be communication with the stranded passengers.

"They treat you very well, but they don't tell you anything. Everything I found out, I found out by myself," Good said.

Company executives have offered an apology to its customers along with travel vouchers for future flights.

American Airlines stock value declined by more than a dollar in trading on Wednesday.
