Taxi Driver Grateful He Survived Armed Robbery

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) ― A taxi driver said he thanked God he was alive Friday morning after armed robbers targeted him in Oakland Park.

The Broward Sheriff's Office got the call at 10:50 a.m. dispatched Oakland Park deputies who arrested two suspects and had been searching for the third.

A 15-year-old of Ft. Lauderdale and a 16-year-old of Oakland Park were taken into custody after they called a cab to 50 NW 56 Ct.

The teens were visiting someone who lives across the street at 61 NW 56 Ct.

When the taxi showed up to pick them up, the 15-year-old armed with a loaded .380 caliber handgun and the 16-year-old ordered taxi driver Vilbrun Belonce, 46, out of the cab and stole his wallet, which contained about $43, officials told CBS4.

The suspects told the cabbie to leave and then fled. CBS4 is not naming the suspects because they are minors.

A perimeter was set up and within 30 minutes, both suspects were arrested.

BSO SWAT team responded to clear the house at 61 NW 56 Ct. and they recovered the handgun used in the robbery.

Nobody was injured however, a BSO deputy responding to the armed car-jacking in progress call was involved in a minor crash in the 3400 blk. of NW 9 Ave. The victims wallet was recovered on the roof of 60 NW 56 Ct. with only $20. No further information expected on this case.

BSO searched the residential area at 61 NW 56th Ct. They believed the suspect had hidden inside a house nearby.

A BSO deputy also sustained minor injuries after his patrol car got into an accident on the 3400 block of NW 9th Ave. Police say he was responding to the call. He was transported to a local hospital.
