Baby Born In Elevator, Delivered By Fire Rescue
CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) ―
Sometimes life just can't wait. A South Florida couple learned that lesson Saturday when their baby was in such a rush to be born, they made it to the hospital, but not the delivery room.
Fire fighters are calling the event extraordinary. A mother was at the Coral Square Mall Saturday when her water broke. She called Fire Rescue for help and got more than she bargained for.
It wasn't a typical emergency call. In fact, it was a first for Mike Motonak with the Coral Springs Fire Rescue. "When we arrived at the mall we found her inside of a shoe store shopping," Motonak told CBS4 Reporter Shomari Stone. "Her water had indeed broke. We quickly loaded her on a stretcher and got her to the hospital."
The team rushed her inside and tried to make it up to the Labor and Delivery Unit. They thought they were in the clear once they made it to the elevator. Then, the mother began giving birth.
"This is pretty extraordinary to have it happen, especially the fact that we were at the hospital already and we were expecting to make it to the Labor and Delivery Unit," Motonak said.
The hospital staff took over when the elevator opened. Now the nurses, the mother, and the fire rescue workers will never forget October 11, 2008. When asked how they'll remember the day: "I guess I could call it a special delivery," Motonak chuckled.
The mother and infant are at Coral Springs Medical Center where they are resting. The mother was asked to rate the rescue workers delivery abilities on a scale of one to ten; she gave them an 11.
