Miami's preservation board will vote on whether to declare a pair of Bacardi buildings historic.

They've been a part of Miami's cultural heritage for nearly five decades and on Tuesday the city's Historic Preservation Board will vote on whether the two mural-adorned buildings owned by rum maker Bacardi USA should be declared historic.
The buildings currently house Bacardi USA, in a business district just north of downtown Miami. However, the company plans to move to suburban Coral Gables later this year and hasn't said what it will do with the two structures.
Preservationists say the buildings are historically and culturally significant even though the older of the two is a few years shy of the 50-year threshold normally used for historic preservation status.
The historic designation would prohibit any changes to the buildings and keep the buildings from being demolished.
The towers, designed by Cuban architect Enrique Gutierrez and built in 1963, are seen as a leading example of the Miami Modern style and also as a symbol of the Cuban exile community.
