New Beach Safety Pole Helping Save Lives
LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. (CBS4) ―
It's being hailed as a lifesaving measure in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. It's a simple post with a number for emergency workers to identify an address. It also has a life preserver to throw to a swimmer in trouble. The volunteer fire department in the area came up with the idea as an alternative to lifeguards, which the city doesn't have.
"This device costs less than $150 and now, every inch of our beach is protected. You can't be more than 250 feet apart," said Lauderdale-by-the-Sea fire chief Jerry Mcintee.
U.S. Congressman Ron Klein said the new program is something that all beach communities in Florida can learn from.
"When someone is in trouble, they can say I'm at Post 7, instead of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea," Klein said.
Since the poles were installed, two people's lives have been saved.
