Tens of thousands of bees did not cause the death of a man whose body was found on the rooftop of a Kendall apartment complex, according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office.
Larry Cameron of the Medical Examiner's office told
CBS4 News, "The man's death was not in any way caused by bees. He had hardening of the arteries. He had a heart attack."
The body of Jorge Luis Acosta, 61, was found on the roof of the three-story Tree Top apartment building Tuesday morning at 10840 SW 84th Street.
He was about 50 feet from a large hive that likely contained more than 50,000 bees. Acosta wore protective gear that covered only his head and upper body.
Neighbors say they had been having problems with a beehive for the past 18 months.
Miami-Dade Police say Acosta was a free lance bee expert who agreed to remove the bees from the roof. He then wanted to transport the bees to his residence where he cultivates bee hives as a hobby, said police.
After Acosta died on the roof, the apartment complex managers called in the company, Bird & Bee Removal, to get rid of the bees. "We got rid of all of them by spraying them with chemicals," said company spokesman Rolando Calzadilla. He said there could be other hives as well.
Samples of the bees were being sent to a laboratory at the University of Florida to determine what type of bees they were.
