Davie Family Hopes Santa Can Ride To The Rescue

DAVIE (CBS4) ― It's something almost every kid has asked Santa for at Christmas time. But, when you are a child with special needs, finding and riding a new bike is not easy. One Davie family hopes they can manage to fulfill a Christmas wish with a special bike.

6-year-old Nicola Simcox can play her piano, but it's a bicycle that is her muse right now. Nicola has the most severe form of Cornelia de Lange syndrome, a genetic mutation that means she can't walk or talk. She is half the size of a typical 6-year-old but her mother Kara said she comprehends what's going on and for Christmas she wants a bicycle.

Most kids with Cornelia de Lange syndrome get frustrated because they have no outlet for their energy. They often will hit themselves or even severely scratch themselves, because they're so frustrated. A bike would help relieve some of that anguish.

Nicola's 4-year-old brother Pierce is an avid bike rider. She lights up seeing her brother enjoy riding his bike. "It just inspired me. This would be a great Christmas wish for her, said Nicola's mom.

Kara's looked for that special bike for three years and she found it. But there is just one thing standing in the way of Nicola getting that special bike she wants for Christmas. "It is very expensive," admitted Kara. The ticket price is $5,000 dollars but we called the company in Canada to negotiate and we got the price down to $4,000. A price that's more workable and may mean Nicola is one step closer to getting just one more toy she could operate herself and help her develop mentally and physically.

"It's hard as a mother to watch her frustrated and not do what other kids are able to do," admitted Kara.

CBS4 and Neighbors 4 Neighbors want to help Nicola get that bike! So, if you can give anything please go to our N4N page, or call 305-597-4404.

By the way, Thursday, December 18th is Nicola's 6th birthday.

Happy Birthday Nicola!
