Second Bird Snagged By Fishing Line

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) ― Animal care experts want to remind fishers to take care of their fishing line, so no animals can get caught up in it and be injured. This announcement is coming after a second bird was found dangling from a tree.

A Great Egret is bandaged and bruised after it was found dangling, injured and scared, from a tree in Pompano Beach. A while ago, a pelican was found hanging from a branch in Dania Beach for days.

"He was dangling by fishing line," explained Dr. Antonia Gardner. "There was a hook in the bottom of the humorous, right here."

To get that line untangled and to take out the hook, Dr. Gardner had to sedate the bird and operate. The goal is to get the Egret into a pen with another egret. Hopefully, both will be able to streach their wings, fly and hop around.

"His wing is bandaged to his body. We're gonna keep it that way for about a week to make sure that his shoulder stays in place," explained Dr. Gardener.

It's sad to see an animal injured like this. What makes it worse is that it likely could have been avoided. That leads us to the moral of this whole story: "Dispose of your extra fishing line and your hooks responsibly. These birds can become entangled in them and it could become fatal; this bird may never be able to fly again and that would be a shame."
