Egret Snagged By Fishing Line & Hook Has Died

Experts Believe The Stress The Bird Has Suffered Caused Its Death

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) ― A Great Egret, found dangling from a tree in Pompano Beach, tangled in fishing wire has died. The bird also had a fishing hook stuck in him.

"He was dangling by fishing line," explained Dr. Antonia Gardner on Friday afternoon. "There was a hook in the bottom of the humorous, right here."

To get that line untangled and to take out the hook, Dr. Gardner had to sedate the bird and operate. Over the weekend, however, the bird died. Vets believe stress may have caused its death.

Animal care experts say incidents like this can be avoided if only fishermen would properly dispose of extra fishing line and hooks.

Last May, an injured pelican was found hanging from a tree branch in Dania Beach for days. It eventually recovered.
