Boca Mall Owners Sued By Victim's Family

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ―

The husband of Randi Gorenberg, who was murdered last year after leaving a Boca Raton shopping center , has sued the mall's owner. Gorenberg was shot and pushed from her car shortly after leaving the Town Center mall owned by Simon Property Group. Simon has denied wrongdoing and said security was adequate. Gorenberg's husband, Stewart, sued Simon on Wednesday in Palm Beach County, alleging negligence.

Several months ago, a new crime prevention task force had been formed at the urging of the Boca Raton Town Center mall, where three people had been murdered and another abducted and released.

The Community Safety Awareness and Crime Prevention Task Force was formed to bring together all sectors of Boca Raton including businesses and local government, law enforcement, community-based organizations and residents to outline goals for ensuring public safety.

It was initiated by mall officials, where investigators suspect the same man robbed Nancy Bochicchio, 47, of suburban Boca Raton outside Town Center before binding her hand and foot, pulling swimming goggles over her eyes and shooting her and her 7-year-old daughter, Joey Bochicchio-Hauser, in the head at point-blank range. Their bodies were found in their SUV idling outside Sears early Dec. 13.

Noting similarities with other crimes, including the murder of Gorenberg, a 52-year-old wife and mother shot dead after shopping at Town Center on March 23, Boca Raton police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office formed a joint investigative task force to probe the killings.

Also a woman in August of 2007 was robbed and kidnapped at the mall.

"Unfortunately, lots of times it takes a catalyst event like that, to kind of slap you beside the face you know upside the head and say "let's wake up, " said Cheryl Budd of Task Force.

The task force consists of 13 members with additional people recruited as needed.

It was helped in its formation by the National Crime Prevention Council, which will work with the task force and improve the dialogue with and involvement of residents of the area.
