Woman Walking Dog Discovers Body In Canal

BOCA RATON (CBS4) ― A Boca Raton woman was out walking her dog when she made a gruesome discovery Saturday morning: a body floating along the canal.

Another dog with a leash and collar came up to her and that's when the woman saw the body, which was on the bottom of a steep embankment, partially in the water.

Boca Raton police have identified the dead woman as Karen Fletcher, 49. Her dog Casey is credited for alerting the dog walker. But the loyal Labrador mix is now in a Humane Society shelter after losing her owner and her home. Police say Fletcher appears to have died after hitting her head.

"It's sad this is where we walk everyday. It's an unbelievable thing," Saralyn Kukic told CBS4's Joan Murray.

The discovery was made near the 5800 block of Town Bay Drive, according to Officer Sandra Boonenberg of Boca Raton Police Department.

Steve Ragno who lives in the apartment complex where Fletcher's body was found said the bond is strong between humans and their pets.

"The attachment between people and pets is great," Ragno said.

Detectives continue to investigate what caused her death, but say they have found nothing suspicious. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jeff Clare at (561) 338-1246.
