Claudia De La Rosa, charged with delaying an American Airlines flight by making a bomb threat Tuesday.
Miami-Dade Police
A Sunny Isles woman concerned her boss would miss his pre-Thanksgiving AmericanAirlines flight to Honduras apparently tried to buy him some extra timeby making a bomb threat. While the flight was detained so was she, after she was caught because she not only phoned the threat in, she used a computer to e-mail it, leading police straight to her door.
Claudia De La Rosa, a Colombian native now living in Sunny Isles, was charged by Miami-Dade police with making a false bomb report after she was arrested early Wednesday morning at the the apartment of her employer, in the Jade condo on Brickell Avenue.
Police were able to track her down by tracing a unique computer address that is attached to most e-mail. Known as the IP address, police were able to use a subpoena made to the e-mail provider and trace the IP to a computer at the Jade condo where De La Rosa was staying.
An arrest affidavit made public by Miami-Dade police said a woman contacted Miami International Airport early Tuesday morning, claiming a bomb had been placed on American Airlines flight 953, scheduled to leave for Honduras shortly after 10 a.m..
An email was also received with the same information.
Police ordered the plane held, and removed all the luggage for inspection. The flight was delayed for hours, until police determined there was no bomb was aboard and allowed the flight to leave.
As the plane was being searched, detectives were looking for the person who made the threat, something made easier because the person used e-mail as well as the telephone.
When police arrived at the condo early Thanksgiving morning, They found De La Rosa, who according to the affidavit admitted making the threat.
She said she had arrived late for work Tuesday morning, causing her boss to be late leaving for the airport. Concerned that her boss would miss the flight, she said she first called in the threat, and then used the computer in the apartment to send an e-mail, apparently just to be sure.
De La Rosa was taken into custody on the bomb report charge. There was no indication in the arrest affidavit that the employer knew De La Rosa was going to attempt to delay the plane with the threat.
The name of her employer was not made made public. It's not known if he made the flight because of the delay caused by the bomb threat.
De La Rosa was ordered held on $75 hundred bond, which she paid Thursday and was released.
