Environmentalists have taken aim at a target that dominates store shelves all across the country, bottled water. They claim tap water is better, while bottled water is both economically unsound and environmentally damaging.
Now, the group has support from more than a dozen mayors, including Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, who are calling on local governments to phase out bottled-water. The resolution will be presented to the U.S. Mayors Conference, which began on Friday.
Much like the
recent initiative between CBS, Ecomedia and several cities, the city of Miami is leading by example. In March, Miami ordered officials to stop spending city money on bottled water that was in containers under two-liters.
Some restaurants in Miami's Design Destrict, including Pacific Time and Fratelli Lyon, have stopped selling bottled water and now only serve tap.
Bottled water makers say their product is purified more than tap water.
But, Mayor Diaz and supporters of the program like City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, say banning the city's consumption of bottled water could save the city as much as $200,000 a year
