Pink: "It's the color of my life now," Jamie Danger said from the comfort of her recording studio at her home.
A South Florida woman who used to be the center of attention is sharing the spotlight. Jamie Danger is an entertainer, but most importantly, she is a cancer survivor. Now, Danger is fighting to survive the insurance bills that keep mounting.
"You are all decked out in pink,"
CBS4's Jorge Estevez exclaimed to Jamie Danger, sitting in her pink t-shirt and pink nail polish.
"It's the color of my life now," Danger said from the comfort of her recording studio at her home in Pembroke Pines. The breast cancer survivor is proud of her spirit which has helped her survive cancer, but not her medical bills.
"How much do you think you owe?"
Estevez asked.
"I can't ball-park it. I can't tell you what cancer costs," responded Danger, who believed she owed tens of thousands of dollars. "Why are we paying our life's blood to keep our insurance? Why did I work through chemo? Everybody in my life said, 'What are you, crazy? Who is going to take care of you if you didn't keep my insurance?'" said Danger.
Danger's chemo almost killed her, but she survived the treatments and has pictures documenting the entire procedure.
Worse, though, the bills piled up after the chemo was over. "When you put things in a positive note, you tend to receive positive back," said Danger.
Jamie headed to Washington with the American Cancer Society to encourage lawmakers to reevaluate our insurance system; not by singing, but by simply telling her story.
"If my stage presence is the only way I can do it with my talent, then yes, I see it this is going somewhere. Now I am helping people," said Danger, who is excited that she can help others going through the same thing she is.
