With 'feels like' temperatures dipping into the upper and mid 40s Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, many homeless men and women sought the warmth of several shelters located around Broward County.
At the Salvation Army shelter off Broward Boulevard, Lily Gallardo said they usually see about 160 people taking advantage of the services they offer. Tuesday night they received quite a few more as the temperature began to drop.
"These are people who are so vulnerable, they're on the street and it's cold or hot or raining out there. When it's really cold, 45 degrees and below here in South Florida is really cold (they come in)," said Gallardo. "Because we want to help and we're compassionate and we don't want anybody exposed to the elements out there.
The chilly snap is not expected to last very long. While Wednesday's high temperatures will only reach the low 70s, a warming trend is on the way. South Florida will see daily high temperatures near 80 degrees by week's end into the weekend; lows for the rest of the week should be in the mid 60s.
