Broward County Offices, Schools Remain Open

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Hurricane Ike looks like it will spare South Florida the worst of wet weather. In response, Broward County has back off emergency planning.

All government agencies in the county will be open Monday. County schools will also be open. Shelters will not be opened; coastal evacuations will not take place.

Palm Beach County offices and schools will also be open Monday. Florida Atlantic University campuses will also be open and operating normally.

Broward County Emergency officials do not expect tropical storm-force winds to affect Broward County. Rain bands, strong thunderstorms and even tornadoes may be possible, however. Residents should remain on guard for strong storms.

However, there are a few closings due to the weather that could come from the edges of Hurricane Ike.

The city of Plantation has canceled bulk garbage and recyclables pick-up for all homes west of University Drive. Those items should not be placed out until pick-up resumes. They could become hazardous in bad weather conditions. Regular trash pick-up in Plantation will continue as normal.

The Jack Pot Rodeo and dog training classes at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie have been canceled through Wednesday.

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has postponed the World Extreme Cage Fighting Faber vs. Brown match scheduled for Wednesday. The fight will now take place November 5th. Tickets for Wednesday's event will be honored that day. Refunds for those who cannot make the new date can be obtained where the tickets were purchased.
