Broward Is The Only One With Exact Numbers, Traffic Dropped 1%

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― In Broward County, on the average, daily traffic dropped about 1 percent in 2007. Whether individual commuters notice a difference depends where they live and which routes they take.

One factor contributing to the traffic decline in Broward: in the past two years, 55,000 more residents left the county than moved in from other states, according to U.S. census estimates.

In an interview conducted six years with a South Florida motorist, William Batisto said, "It's getting worse.  I've been here 17 years, and I don't see progress" about the traffic.

And today, Larry Allen of Florida's Regional Planning Council told CBS4 Ted Scouten, "traffic is going down" in Miami-Dade and Broward and Palm Beach counties, confirming there are less drivers on the road.

Other factors contributing to the traffic drop:  more people are taking the train, taking the bus or carpooling because of soaring gas prices.

This doesn't mean traffic is no longer a nightmare; it's simply not as much of a nightmare. And then there is the question dealing with our notoriously rude drivers.

There still are areas in the county where traffic volumes have increased; Florida's Turnpike jumped by about 30 to 35 percent during the past five years; I-95 traffic is up only slightly.
