Broward Creates Task Force On Foreclosure Crisis
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
As the number of South Florida foreclosures continues to grow at a record breaking pace, Broward County is taking steps to help homeowners in crisis.
Tuesday, commissioners voted to create a 14-member task force to explore what can be done to reduce the number of foreclosures in the county which have forced thousands from their homes. To pay for the panel, county commissioners approved transferring $10-thousand from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund to create the Foreclosure Prevention Blue Ribbon Panel.
Mayor Lois Wexler said the panel will focus on finding ways to maximize funding for the county's foreclosure support services and educate homeowners about their options when they are faced foreclosure. Currently, the county provides the Broward County Housing Authority $400-thousand to provide foreclosure assistance.
Wexler says the panel will have six months to study the problem and then report back to commissioners. In the last year, nearly 25-thousand properties in Broward County were listed in the initial proceedings for foreclosure.
