Broward Schools Brace For Budget Cuts
DANIA BEACH, Fla. (CBS4) ―
Broward schools are headed for some tough times, as the county prepares to make serious slashes in their budget. What's the reason? Voters went for Amendment One ultimately equaling less money for public schools.
One teacher, mother and homeowner had this to say about the situation.
"We're all concerned with the property taxes as high as they are here in South Florida.
However, though, as a teacher, we do not want to see more budget cuts," said Tadji Rodriguez.
"It all comes down to the students and they are ultimately going to suffer," said teacher Keith Suranna.
But teachers have a right to worry. Broward schools expect to lose $150 million over the next five years because of Amendment One
"I'm very concerned and I'm not sure that I truly can get through year two or three, you know, having some look at reduction force," said Broward School Superintendent Jim Notter.
The superintendent says he will cut back on maintenance and interior cleaning to absorb the loss. Teachers will be last.
Governor Crist said "Teachers shouldn't worry. They will be in great shape."
Crist wants a billion more for education but lawmakers have a tall order to cut billions to balance Florida's budget.
It all adds up to a lot of uncertainty for teachers and their future.
"My goal is to make sure my students get the best. I want to give them most of my time that I can," said Tadji Rodriguez.
