It's official Al Lamberti will stay on as Broward Sheriff.
Saturday, Broward County elections officials certified the votes in Lamberti's favor over challenger Scott Israel. According to the Supervisor of Elections website, Lamberti received 348,420 votes to Israel's 333,045; a difference of about 2 and quarter percent.
At one point in the vote count after election day, Lamberti (R) had 51-percent of the vote while Israel (D) had 49-percent with 15,553 votes separating the two. Elections officials were not able to finalize the count until November 15th which was the deadline for military and overseas ballots.
The race for Broward Sheriff was one of the biggest on the ballot in Broward County between two men with 30 years of law enforcement service.
Lamberti was appointed sheriff by Gov. Charlie Crist last year after Ken Jenne resigned amid corruption charges and it's a race that turned nasty.
The powerful position of Sheriff brings an enormous workload. The Sheriff's Office has more than 6-thousand employees and a budget of nearly $700 million. Lamberti is the only Republican to currently hold a countywide office in Broward, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1.
