A taxi driver who was robbed, attacked and had his vehicle stolen Friday morning in north Miami Beach, survived to tell his story, explaining he's thinking about "changing his career" after ten years on the job.
The frightening incident occurred when the taxi driver was on Collins Avenue and 72nd Street in Miami Beach when he picked up a man wanting to be taken to North Bay Village Friday morning.
CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez talked to the victim, Peter Roof, after he was released from the hospital Friday.
"He choked me, and my initial reaction was I grabbed his arm and I felt the blade," says Roof. The taxi driver was stabbed in the upper torso but didn't go down without a fight.
"I grabbed his wrist and then he said, 'take the money out of your pocket, put it on your seat, and then get out of the car.'" Roof added, "I did that and I grabbed his wrist again because I was afraid he was going to take another swing at me with the knife."
After the attack, Roof was asked to get out, and the suspect drove away in the stolen vehicle and with $257.
"There are a lot of other problems that go along with the taxi cab industry," says Roof. "This is like the straw that broke the camel's back."
Roof says the suspect was wearing a light-blue shirt, jeans and a hat.
CBS4 Peter D'Oench reports that one federal agency said cab drivers are sixty times more likely than the average person to be murdered on the job.
The license plate for the missing taxi, a 1999 Ford Sedan, is 619 IQE.
Police are asking the public for any information regarding the incident to call
Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
