Cabbie "Critical" After Being Shot During Robbery

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A Super Cab driver has been hospitalized after he was shot during a robbery early Wednesday morning.

Super Cab has not released the name of the injured driver but did say the robbery occurred near a McDonald's restaurant in the 92 hundred block of NW 7th Avenue.

The driver, who was shot several times, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Fellow cabbie Mauricio Lopez said it's getting more dangerous out there everyday.

"Believe me, it's a bad, bad situation," said Lopez who was robbed himself driving the exact same cab Tuesday morning.

"He grabbed my phone and said 'give me the money, give me your wallet'," recalled Lopez. "I didn't do anything, I drove straight and he put me down in Liberty City. I told him 'I have family, don't do anything to me I'll do whatever you want'."

Lopez said he got lucky because the man who robbed him took off and he was not hurt.

Cabbie Mohamed Johnas said he too was robbed Tuesday morning in the same area as Wednesday's robbery. He told CBS4 reporter Marybel Rodriguez he's very concerned for his safety and his friend's well being.

"It's very sad about him, you know, he had a family and his family is suffering," said Johnas.

Friends of the injured cabbie say he was a good man who was a pastor during the day and drove a cab at night to make ends meet.

The gunman was described as being in his mid teens, about 5' 6" and weighed about 120 pounds.

Wednesday's robbery comes less than a week after Miami Beach police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect on MacArthur Causeway after he reportedly pistol whipped a driver and stole his taxi.

According to police taxi driver Robertaud Toussaint was carjacked at 3rd Street and Alton Road on South Beach by a man armed with a gun. The suspect, identified as Lawrence McCoy, allegedly hit Toussaint in the head with the gun and took off with his cab.

McCoy, 29, then fled across the causeway, which links Miami Beach and downtown Miami, but he was driving west toward Miami while in the eastbound lanes, against traffic.

Police said the man crashed head-on into another car, and jumped from the taxi in an effort to flee police. When he got out of the taxi, he exchanged gunfire with officers. He was hit and taken to Ryder Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.
