Cane-Fu Classes Helping Seniors Protect Themselves
GARDEN GROVE, Cali. (CBS4) ―
A new trend in self defense is catching on in south Florida. People are learning how to fight off bad guys with the most unlikely tool- a cane.
"For most people a cane is a medical device for me a cane is a weapon," said Bill Kaizer who signed up for the class, "American Cane Self Defense."
For anyone who plans on maybe messing with Bill Kaizer, they better watch out, not for his hands but for his cane.
"Why am I here at the cane place, to learn how to use the cane as self defense," said Kaizer. Bill, in his 60's, was joined by others even younger looking to learn Dr. Joe Robaina's strategy which he practices at Robaina Fitness on Calle Ocho in Miami.
"The biggest challenge is getting people to see the power of the cane. They need to see change the whole idea and the whole stigma of, 'I don't want to be seen with the cane cause it is viewed upon as a weakness," Dr. Joe Robaina to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.
The best part about taking the cane class is you can learn how to use the cane in less than an hour. "It's not because the students are so great or the instructor is so wonderful, It's because the cane gives you leverage. The cane gives you leverage," said Robaina.
And the method works for the people learning the skill on how to use the cane. "If I had to I would and I know how," said Kaizer. The classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursday at
Robaina Fitness.
