Car Plunges From 2nd Story Of Parking Garage

Couple Inside The Car Okay

HALLANDALE BEACH (CBS4) ― An elderly couple has a parked car to thank for saving their lives.

Hallandale Beach police said when a woman and man, both in their 70s, tried to park their car on the second floor of a parking garage at 437 Golden Isles Drive, the brakes failed sending their vehicle through the barrier and over the edge. Their car then slammed into a vehicle parked directly below.

Officials said it could have been a lot worse.

"Things just come together and the fact is where they came off there happened to be a parking spot with a vehicle in it as opposed to the one next to it that was empty," said Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue Chief Richard Stover. "They landed on top of that vehicle which prevented them from continuing to free fall."

The driver was treated for minor injuries, the male passenger was unhurt.
