Two People Die After Train Hits Car In Broward

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Two Tennessee residents died when the car they were in was hit by a Tri-Rail commuter train on Thursday morning; a third person was taken to the hospital. The accident happened just before 9 a.m. on the tracks crossing Commercial Boulevard west of I-95. The car ended up on its roof just off the tracks and two bodies were covered, one of which was across the train tracks.

Fort Lauderdale Police said the driver of the car got caught between the crossing arms that lower before a train crosses an intersection and the driver was unable to get out from between them. The train was traveling northbound at around 80 miles per hour.

Connie Hamblin, 44, and 22-year-old Felicia Hatmaker were declared dead on-scene.

Fort Lauderdale police said a third person named Eddie Hamblin was taken to North Broward Medical Center in critical condition after the accident.

Tri-Rail officials said the accident could cause significant delays to its commuter train service. Bus service was offered to anyone who was delayed due to the accident. Tri-Rail said northbound trains are being turned south at the Fort Lauderdale Station and southbound trains are being turned north at the Pompano Beach Station. Tri-Rail officials said passengers should seek alternate means of transportation for the next several hours.
