Carnival May Give Refunds On Fuel Surcharges
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Cruise passengers on Miami-based Carnival Corp.'s six lines may be reimbursed for fuel surcharges this year if oil prices continue to drop. The plan, beginning October 31, could save families up to $200 per trip.
Carnival announced Friday that if oil drops to $70 a barrel or less, the company will credit cruise passengers this year and next via their onboard spending accounts. Fuel surcharges can add up to $182 for a typical seven-night family cruise.
However, a one-day drop will do nothing for customers. The prices must stay at low levels for 25 straight trading days, ending five days before the cruise departs, for the passengers to be reimbursed.
Fuel surcharges have also been eliminated on many lines for all new bookings for 2010 departures. According to an official statement from Carnival Crop., a price increase on all 2010 sailings will go into place on October 31. Carnival reserves the right to reinstate surcharges as necessary, depending on the price of oil.
Crude oil closed at $77.70 per barrel on Friday. That's a 13-month low.
