Son Of Windjammer Cruises Owner Found Dead
MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ―
Nine days after a Miami Beach gothic castle burned down, the former owner's son is dead.
Joseph Conrad Burke died Saturday at 3 a.m., according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner.
The death is listed unclassified and not much is known about how he died, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.
What is known is that Burke was one of six children whose father Capt. Mike Burke launched Windjammer Barefoot Cruises.
The business made him a millionaire and allowed him the means to purchase the Miami Beach home on North Bay Road, which he turned into a Gothic style mansion. It had a shark-filled moat, gargoyles on the walls and swords that crisscrossed the front gate. Public records show he sold the home for $7.6 million in 2007.
``Joey'' Burke led the company as director and president. He resigned in 2008, the newspaper reported.
That was a year after the company's financial troubles became public. Burke unsuccessfully tried to revive the company by offering sailing cruises to the Caribbean.
On July 17, the mansion went up in flames. Officials are looking into the cause of the fire.
