The arrest of a south Miami-Dade teen for the mutilation and murder of 19 cats in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay has prompted a cat fight of sorts on the social network website Facebook.
Friends of 18-year-old Tyler Weinman, who say that he couldn't have done such horrible things, have created a page called "Justice for Tyler" in an effort to clear his name. So far more than 230 people have signed up as members.
"People shouldn't judge until proven guilty that's all I have to say," Vanessa Jade Lopez wrote.
"If it really was him, he did a really good job hiding from his girlfriend, from all his best friends, and everyone who knew him," Alex Falgons said.
"If they do get the wrong guy and it's not him, they've ruined his life as it is right now," said 19-year-old Kyle Hantzis, who lives next door.
"I hope it's not true," 77-year-old Robert Ehrman said about Weinman who lives across the street from her in Cutler Bay. He called his mother a "lovely person," but said he didn't know the teen well. "It's like a death in the family, I'm sure."
On the opposite side, another group has created a "Justice for Cat Mutilations" page where people can express their outrage over what Weinman allegedly did. This page has more than 620 members.
Meanwhile, hundreds posted comments about the case on Facebook.
Some like Marlene Willey-Partlow said police probably had some evidence to arrest Weinman: "It is my understanding they had him under surveillance, so there must have been some sort of proof that he was the one committing these horrible acts."
Ironically, it was Weinman's own Facebook page that police said led them to him as a suspect. Miami-Dade police Major Julie Miller said Weinman was taken into custody after weeks of investigation and surveillance. He was arrested Saturday evening at a party at a friend's house on the 600 block of Jeronimo Drive in Coral Gables.
Monday Weinman's bond was set at a quarter of a million dollars. In addition to the high bail amount, which has been set higher than some murder cases, Weinman has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Once Weinman posts bail, he will be required to wear an electronic monitor.
Weinman will be arraigned on July 6th.
