Census Reports Decline In Population In S. Fla.

MIAMI (CBS4) ― As the economy has tanked due to the ever-growing foreclosure disaster gripping much of South Florida, the population in Broward County became stagnant in 2008, while Monroe County lost residents, according to the Census Bureau. The lone bright spot in the area was Miami-Dade County which posted a gain of just over 15,000 new residents since mid-2007.

In Miami-Dade County, Doral posted a 5 percent gain in population from mid-2007 to mid-2008, and a 14 percent gain since the 2000 Census. But Doral wasn't the biggest gainer since the 2000 Census, that honor fell to Homestead, which has posted an 82% gain in population. That translates to an addition of just over 26,000 residents to Homestead.

In Broward County, the only city to post more than a one percent gain in population between 2007 and 2008 was Cooper City. The city added nearly 300 people to the population.

But, since 2000, there are several areas in Broward County with large population gains. Most notable among the gainers since 2000 are Parkland and Miramar. Parkland's population jumped 67 percent, which equals a net growth of just fewer than 10,000 new residents. Miramar gained more residents overall, with nearly 34,000 new residents.

Overall in the state of Florida, 161 cities experienced a decline in population.
