An innovative way to raise money is giving South Florida charities tens of thousands of dollars. The Children's Hospital is just one charity that has decided to go high tech to help local children.
"Three North is for cancer patients," said Danny Tamayo to
CBS4's Jorge Estevez as they take a tour of the Children's Hospital's Cancer wing. It's a return for Danny Tamayo, a 19 year old cancer patient now in remission.
"Four years old I was diagnosed with leukemia," said Tamayo.
Danny was in the Children's Hospital 15 years ago.
"I was a kid I didn't really know what was going on. I just knew I had to go to the hospital and receive medication," said Tamayo.
Miami Children's Hospital made his recovery possible.
"There are colors and toys. Everyone is always smiling. It's a great environment," said Tamayo.
And now the hospital wants to continue to be a great environment but they need funds, so they have become just one of many Florida charities looking at a new way to raise money through online auctions.
Once you get onto the site, you can bid for trips, diamonds and even surgical procedures. The trend is catching on. Since 2004, more than 200 online auctions have raised $2.7 million dollars for Florida charities. The group responsible for the Miami Children's Hospital and others is BiddingForGood.
"This is a great way to get them involved from home," said Danielle Pricken, a spokesperson for the Miami Children's Hospital. People are getting involved and helping patients like Danny, who often returns to Miami Children's Hopsital and thanks those who helped a kid comeback from cancer.
"The more money they can get the more they can put in to making this a better place," said Tamayo.
