Seminole Gambling Deal Clears Major Hurdle
WASHINGTON DC (CBS4) ―
A gambling compact between the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Governor Charlie Crist has cleared another hurdle. Monday, federal authorities gave it their stamp of approval. The final step will be for it to be published in the Federal Register, but it is not clear when that would take place.
Under the agreement, the Seminoles could institue Las Vegas style card games like blackjack and baccarat as well as have exclusive rights to install Class II and Class III slot machines at their seven casinos. In exchange the state would receive $100 million in revenue the first year. In the second year, that guaranteed amount would jump to $125 million, and it would rise to a minimum of $150 million in the third year.
House Speaker Marco Rubio and Senate President Ken Pruitt have challenged Crist's authority to enter into the agreement without
legislative approval.
The Supreme Court plans a hearing on the case January 30th.
