MIAMI (CBS4) ― Charlie Crist, once one of the most popular politicians in the state, has seen the bottom drop out of his approval rating just as he is ramping up for a bit for the U.S. Senate, according to a new poll conducted by CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald and the St. Petersburg Times. Fewer than half of Florida's registered voters think Crist is doing an excellent job as Governor.

That rating is Crist's worst performance since taking office 34 months ago.

When broking our by party, even members of Crist's Republican party are having a problem with his performance, according to the poll. More than half of those polled, 51%, characterize Crist's performance as just fair or poor.

The telephone survey of 600 registered voters was conducted Oct. 25-28, for The Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times and Bay News 9 by Schroth, Eldon and Associates and the Polling Co. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points, overall and slightly more than 6 percentage points for questions asked solely to Democrats or Republicans.

While the vote to fill the seat vacated by former US Senator Mel Martinez is almost one year away, voters are thinking about the race. While Crist is still in the lead, the poll shows only half of Republican voters are backing the Governor.

The poll shows 50 percent of Republicans backing Crist, 28 percent former House Speaker Marco Rubio, and 22 percent undecided.
