Neighbors in the Cascades of Lauderhill Apartment Complex are reeling after learning a 10-month-old baby was hurt there, and ultimately killed.
Paulette Segal has lived in the complex for nearly two decades. She says, "It's upsetting me very much because this is a great neighborhood. We live here! Who could beat a baby? Who could beat a baby? Oh my God."
Lauderhill police blame Allen Rosario. They say he was babysitting his girlfriend's son, Anthony Davilas, in the apartment the couple shares Saturday morning. 15 minutes after the baby's mother went to work, police say Rosario called her and told her to meet him at University Hospital. Anthony wasn't breathing. The baby died at 1 a.m. Monday.
According to Lauderhill Police Captain Rick Rocco, Rosario tried to explain the injuries. "He said that the baby had fallen off of a bed, on to the floor and that's how the child had gotten into this condition."
Police tell a different story. They say Rosario shook the baby so hard he had extensive internal head injuries.
Little Anthony's uncle tells
CBS4's Natalia Zea the family is obviously devastated and aren't ready to speak about what happened until they sort it all out for themselves. For neighbors like Paulette Segal, just knowing something so awful happened so close by is heartbreaking. She said, "There is nothing that a baby could do to make you do that! Nothing!"
Rosario is charged with aggravated child abuse, but police say the State Attorney will likely change that to a homicide charge.
Rosario has no criminal record, and according to police, the Department of Children and Families has never received a complaint of abuse from Anthony's household in the past.
