Infant Dies, Brother Hospitalized But Why?

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A South Florida woman's cry for help ended in tragedy with the loss of one child and the hospitalization of the child's brother.

Paramedics were called to a home Tuesday afternoon in the 13-hundred block of Northwest 77th Terrace after receiving a call that a baby was having trouble breathing. When they arrived they were told that the two children, a baby and an older brother who belonged to a neighbor, were in need of medical attention.

Both children were rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where the younger child died; the older sibling was listed in stable condition.

Neighbors were stunned and saddened by the news of the child's death.

"It's just real sad," said Latarsha Hamilton, "I have two kids of my own and I can't see myself hurting one of them. It shocked everybody around here."

The mother's cousin, Tyletha Wright, said the baby had just been to the hospital within the last two weeks. Montia Moss, another cousin, said she just couldn't believe it.

"It's a pretty bad situation," said Moss, "I feel sorry for her, I feel sorry for her other kids also. I don't know what was really going on with her at this house but I don't think that she would neglect her kids."

A third child who was in the house was placed in the custody of the Department of Children & Families.

Police have not released any information on the identity of the parents or where they were at the time of the incident.

Police are also waiting for the results of the autopsy.
