Brrrr! South Florida Bundles Up

MIAMI (CBS4) ― With low temperatures dipping into the upper 40s early Wednesday morning, South Floridians bundled up as they headed off to work or got the kids off to school.

Early Wednesday morning the National Weather Service reported the lowest temperature recorded at Miami International Airport was 52 degrees, Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airports recorded a low of 51 degrees, Tamiami Airport in Kendall recorded a low of 50 degrees and Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines hit 49 degrees. In the Keys, Marathon's airport recorded a low of 56 degrees and it hit 59 degrees at Key West's airport.

CBS4's Weather Bug recorded the coolest temperature in South Florida, 44 degrees, at Citrus Grove Elementary School in Miami. Plantation hit 45 degrees, Tamarac and Hialeah both saw lows near 47 degrees, and Miramar and Weston were close with a recorded low of 48 degrees.

"I think it's very brisk, you need to be prepared for this," said James Calier, "the wind is making it a lot colder than it seems, there's a lot of wind chill."

The best way to get through the first real cold snap of this winter is to remember the 4 "P's." First protect people, especially the young or the elderly. Dress in layers and loose fitting warm clothing which can be shed as the day warms up or you move into warmer environments. Secondly, protects your pets. If your pet is outside make sure they have an enclosed shelter they can go into to protect them from the wind chill. Protect your plants; if you can take any plants which are sensitive to the cold inside. If they cannot be moved, make sure they are watered or shroud them in plastic to protect their leaves from wind chill. Finally, protect your home against a possible fire. Check all heating equipment; if you use a space heater try to avoid extension cords and keep them at least three feet away from any flammable items, such as curtains or furniture. Before heading out, make sure to turn them off.

Thursday will warm up a bit; lows early Thursday morning will be in the mid 50s with temperatures climbing to low 70s by mid afternoon.
