Mother Copes With Only Child Fighting In Iraq

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) ―

This week marks 5 years since the start of the war in Iraq. But for one South Florida mother, the reality of war is with her every day, as her son fight on the front lines in Iraq.

You could say Christie DeMinico has God on her side: she worships and works at a church in Hollywood. With her son, her only child in Iraq, prayers are what she needs right now.

"You just pray like all the other moms that God is protecting them and watching over them the next day and that he's all right," said DeMinico.

Her 26-year-old son Bryan has been stationed in Iraq since last May, as First Lieutenant. Just three weeks into his tour, they were ambushed, and one of his men was killed, another injured.

"That was their first taste of reality," explained DeMinico.

Sadly, it's a reality that families all over the county have experienced in the last five years of this war. So far, nearly 4,000 Americans have died and nearly 60,000 have been injured. Many come home without arms or legs.

"My son said on the phone, "Mom my goal is to come back with my legs," said DeMinico.

And reports from military analyst said that the war will likely go on for several more years, news that those with loved one in the military do not want to hear.

"We all pray that, I believe for the war  will come to an end," explained DeMinico. "And that the Iraqi people can maintain themselves."

To keep from focusing on the dangers her son and his men face every day, she collects letters. And with the help of church members fills and send care boxes, making sure the soldiers are never forgotten.

Like many mother with sons or daughters still serving in Iraq, DeMinico, is hoping to take her son's yellow ribbon off a tree, when he comes back home to her this July.
