A South Florida Church Giving Away Money

CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) ―

It was a change of pace for a South Florida church on Sunday; instead of taking in money, the church handed out cash to the congregants.

Pastor David Hughes of the Church by the Glades said the best way to teach generosity is by being generous within the church.

It was not the typical church, it looked like a rock concert, and Hughes wore jeans.

"It's Mother's Day, you know a single mom who maybe is alone," said the pastor.  "Would you buy her some flowers today?"

Four-thousand members of the congregation were told to take the envelopes filled with money and opened them; Inside were bills anywhere from five to one-thousand dollars.  The rules were to give it away but not back to the church.

"I thought it was awesome, I thought it was the power of giving," said Adya Reyes a church member.

The money came with a message; that giving can be better than receiving.

"I'm hoping as they go out and they [see] the generous God," said Hughes.  "The people will be blessed and the people will start to recognize God is working in their life."

Hughes said he felt compelled to dip into his fund and lead by example. He said this is not an everyday thing that they do.
