Events, Closures On Veterans Day
SOUTH FLORIDA (CBS4) ―
VETERANS DAY EVENTS:
Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade:
Parade got underway at 9 a.m. on Washington Avenue from 17th to 11th Street. The wreath laying ceremony and 21-gun salute at Flamingo Park will begin at approximately 10:30 am following the parade. The ceremony will feature guest speakers including Mayor Matti Bower, Parade Grand Marshal Commissioner Libbin and J. Douglas Morris, Jr., Master of Ceremonies.
A moment of silence will be observed at 11:00 am in honor of the First World War Armistice Day Tradition. Immediately following Commissioner Libbin will be hosting a picnic for parade participants. Commissioner Libbin has made it his mission to revive the Veterans Day festivities, adding the picnic which will be Kosher for all to enjoy. His outreach to schools, organizations and businesses to drum up marchers has been met with tremendous response, with an impressive 1,000+ expected marchers. "Commissioner Libbin has really helped to reorganize the parade to a greater honor for our veterans," said David Patlak, Vice Commander, of the American Legion Miami Beach Post 85. He is bringing in students and a plan that makes this the best Veterans Day on Miami Beach ever. The men and women who serve our country with distinction deserve our appreciation every day, said Commissioner Libbin.
Homestead and Florida City Veterans Day Parade:
The 48th annual Veterans' Day Parade is sponsored this year by the Arrant-Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4127. Participants will march along Flagler Avenue to Krome Avenue then head north to Eighth Street and east to Flagler. Groups will line up starting at 11 a.m. The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) have been informed that they may not march in the parade with the Confederate Battle Flag. The SCV has not said if they will march without the flag.
Hialeah:
Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina, the City Council and the City of Hialeah Veterans Affairs Board invites everyone to the Veteran's Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at Hialeah's Triangle Park, located at Palm Avenue and Okeechobee Road.
Davie:
The Town of Davie in collaboration with Senior Citizen Advisory Committee Chair Bill Leibowitz hosted a host a Veterans Day memorial service at Veterans Park located at 5750 SW 39th Street.
Ft. Lauderdale:
The City of Fort Lauderdale in cooperation with the Air Force Association Gold Coast Chapter 351 is hosting a Veterans Day Commemoration to recognize the men and women who have honorably served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. The event will include a keynote address from Korean War Double Ace Major General Frederick C. Boots Blesse. Blesse is recognized as one of the top fighter pilots.
The City of Fort Lauderdale will also unveil a special tribute banner dedicated to our fallen heroes at Fort Hood, which attendees will sign to express sympathy to the victims families. Other event highlights will include speakers from the Fort Lauderdale City Commission, recognition of local veterans' organizations and a musical performance by students from the Dillard Center for the Arts. The ceremony will culminate with the rededication of the newly restored F-86H Sabre Jet Memorial and unveiling of commemorative plaques. The event takes place in front of the War Memorial Auditorium at Holiday Park on Sunrise Boulevard.
Pembroke Pines:
Veterans and their families are invited to attend the city's annual event at noon at Fletcher Park - 7900 Johnson Street.
