Coast Guard Discovers $52M Worth Of Cocaine

MAYPORT (AP) ― The Coast Guard has unloaded an estimated $52 million worth of cocaine found on a fishing boat in the western Caribbean.

About 1,600 pounds of cocaine were removed at Mayport Naval Station, northeast of Jacksonville. Six suspected smugglers were also turned over to federal authorities.

The fishing boat, Miss Alysa, was originally boarded by the Texas-based cutter Dauntless early last week and crews found evidence of narcotics by using an ion scan machine.

They were unable to find the drugs, but another crew from the Virginia-based cutter Forward located the drugs hidden in a secret compartment.
