Coconut Creek Man Electrocuted Picking Mangos
OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) ―
The quest for mangos from a backyard tree in Oakland Park caused a 43-year-old Thanhkim Giang his life early Sunday morning.
According to Broward Sheriff's Office, Giang and his wife were visiting a friend when he decided to use a metal pole to knock down the fruit. It turned out to be a fatal decision.
He inadvertently touched a high power voltage line and was electrocuted.
Giang's 40-year-old wife Day tried to push her husband and break contact with the wire and ended up getting jolted herself.
She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale for treatment.
In Coconut Creek, where the Giangs lived with their two young children, neighbors were shocked and saddened by the news.
"It's bad you see these FPL commercials warning of power lines, but I guess it was hidden," said John Davis.
The Giang family had actually planted their own mango tree in their front yard a couple of years ago, but it had not yet begun to bear fruit.
Neighbors heard the noise and came over, called 911 and began CPR until Oakland Park Fire Rescue arrived. Thanhkim Giang was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
