Off-Duty Policeman Killed In Motorcycle Crash

The Accident Happened At Banks Road And Coconut Creek Pkwy

Officer Identified As Michael Thomas McQuaid

COCONUT CREEK (CBS4) ― A motorcycle accident in Coconut Creek has claimed the life of an off-duty Margate Police Officer.

Margate Police have confirmed that officer Michael Thomas McQuaid, 36, was killed Friday morning while he was riding his personal motorcycle around 11:30 a.m. Police say McQuaid's motorcycle collided with an SUV at the intersection of Coconut Creek Parkway and Banks Road.

McQuaid had been on the Margate Police force for five years. He was a SWAT and Field Training Officer. Prior to joining the Margate Police Department, he was on the Plantation Police force. He was also a former U.S. Marine.

Police aren't sure how the accident happened but they do say that McQuaid was wearing his helmet. He was apparently on the way to a luncheon for another officer.

He is survived by his wife, who is a Miramar Police officer.

CBS4 Reporter Joan Murray spoke to the daughter of the SUV driver. She explained that her mother was behind the wheel with her other child as they were headed to the bank. She stopped immediately and remained on the scene.
